Growing up as a highly sensitive and quiet person, who preferred alternative ways of communication, such as writing and painting rather than speaking, and partially non verbal, Nathanail’s paintings had been his main way of communicating his feelings, interests and had helped him form new relationships with both people his age and older people. Artistic expression in general is his way of capturing what’s alive in his inner world and making it visible through a physical form. Paper works as a mirror for his neuro-structure, the way he’s experiencing emotions and feelings, the intensity of his senses.

Nathanail’s way of thinking about letters, words, material interactions or even social interactions and self perception is based on images, described as moving shapes or partially transparent pictures that are relocating and interacting with one another. Shapes that interact with each other are also a way for him to solve abstract mathematical problems or to approach “balance” in terms of communication, writing or painting. Synesthesia is also a factor in this particular experience that influences his thinking process. His abstract paintings and drawings are describing internal mind maps, emotional and relational landscapes and so much more.

While studying Fine Arts (Florina- Greece. 2011-2017) he created the “multiple ball-pens”. With this tool, he started a series of paintings to talk about his journey into researching his own neural activity, the structure of his thinking and how all these embedded his social interactive systems. Creating these images was a persistent desire to describe the emotional expression of the autistic mind, avoiding a recognizable image for the human eye.

The series continued years after his graduation. Focusing on spirituality, parallel worlds and astronomy, Nathanail is trying to give us a sense of wondering and questioning about what is visible and what is not. The structures in his paintings are coming from within his own neuroactivity, but can also be identical to the  structure we see in nature, in life events and even in social structures.

"To find a way out I had to unconsciously picture my inner world and recognize the chaos I was living in."
